Seatons who seem to be un-related

-

John Rottson (Robertson) and Issobell Seaton (Dull OPR, 26 Feb 1706)

February the 16th, John Rottson in this parish and Issobell Seatone in Cluine of Athol parish were booked. Married February the 26th.

There are no baptismal records for any children.

Isobel Seaton's parentage is unknown, but Clune-more and Clune-beg were on the opposite side of the river from Balrobie and Fonvuick.

-

John Cock and Margaret Seaton (Dull, 8th April 1714)

John Cock, alias Robertson in Mains of Grandtully.

Nothing more is known about this couple, but it may be the same couple as in Blair Atholl ~1718, which follows.

-

John Robertson and Margaret Seaton (about 1718, but no known marriage in OPRs)

It is most likely that the bride and groom married in Blair Atholl parish before marriages were listed in the OPR.

There seem to have been at least three children from this marriage, all of whom were born at Clune-beg:
Christian, 21st June 1719;
Anne, 1st April 1722;
Robert, 27th February 1725

-

Duncan Seaton and Isobel Menzies (about 1718, but no known marriage in OPRs)

It is most likely that the bride and groom married in Blair Atholl parish before marriages were listed in the OPR.

There seem to have been only one child from this marriage, born at Croftnacussaig in Glen Fender:
Beatrice, 19th July 1719

-

John McGlashan or Gow and Margaret Seaton (about 1718, but no known marriage in OPRs)

It is most likely that the bride and groom married in Blair Atholl parish before marriages were listed in the OPR. A couple of the McGlashan families in Blair Atholl parish used the alias surname of Gow, possibly because they were, or had been, blacksmiths.

There seem to have been at two, or possibly three, children from this marriage:
Duncan (Gow), 26th February 1719 at Haugh of Invervack;
Donald (McGlashan), 4th February 1722 at Invervack;
Jean (McGlashan), 18th May 1738 at Grennich.

-

Neill Stewart and Janet Seaton (Dull, 21st June 1725)

A testificate was given to Neill Stewart in Glen Fincastle in the parish of Dull, to be married to Janet Seaton in the parish of Blair

Nothing more is known about this couple.

-

John Setton and Isabel McNab (~1726)

No marriage has been identified for this couple, so it may have taken place in Blair Atholl parish rather than in Moulin parish.

Baptised, Duncan to John Setton and Isabel McNab in Bailnavel, 9th March 1727.

Bailnavel may be the 'Balvel' shown as situated to the east of Faskally House on James Stobie's 1783 map. It also may have been known as 'Belleville' in the Faskally Court Books.

-

Alexander Re(i)d and Janet Seaton (Dull, 13th May 1728)

This day a testificate was given to Alexander Red in the parish of Dull, to be married to Janet Seaton in the parish of Blair. John Stewart and Neil Stewart, witnesses

The couple had three children, whose baptisms are recorded in the Dull OPR: Elspit, 15th April 1732; Betty (Beatrice?), 29th September 1737; and Donald, 1st April 1747.

-

Duncan Campbell and Isabel Seaton (Moulin, 2nd June 1731)

May 23rd. Duncan Campbell and Isabel Setton, both in this parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered were married June 2nd day.

The couple had at least two children who were baptised in Moulin parish: Donald, 30th March 1732; and Isabel, 31st August 1747.

March 30th, baptised Donald to Duncan Campbell and Isobel Setton in Dysart.

Nota: August 31st, baptised Isabel to Duncan Campbell and Isabel Setton in Bailv.. (Bailvulin?)

-

John Seaton and Margaret Fleming (Moulin, 8th June 1732)

May 24th. John Setton and Margaret Flemming, both in this parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered were married June 8th.

There are no recorded baptisms for any children.

On 7th September 1746, the Blair Atholl Kirk Session gave a testificate to Margaret Fleming, spouse to John Seaton in Runmore. The reason for needing a testificate is not given, but probably she was going to the Low Country and needed a character reference.

-

Alexander Fergusson and Jean Seaton (Blair Atholl, 26th December 1733)

This is one of a handful of proclamations from Blair Atholl parish, made before the regular recording of marriages commenced.

Alexander Fergusson in (Balinluig of) Strathgroy and Jean Seaton in Tenandry, proclaimed in order to marriage.
(At this time 'Tenandry' probably meant the Coille Bhrochain area)

There are no recorded baptisms for any children.

-

Thomas McCra (McCraw or McRaw) and Janet Seaton (Moulin, 6th February 1735)

Nota: January 18th. Thomas McCra and Janet Setton, parishioners..........married 6th February.

There are no recorded baptisms for any children.

-

John Seton and Janet Toshich (Moulin, 16th December 1736)

November 27th. John Seton in this parish and Janet Toshich (McIntosh), Blair parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered were married 16th (December).

Nothing more is known about this couple.

-

Alexander McGlashan and Elspet Setton (Moulin, 1st December 1737)

This entry was added into a cramped space between two other entries and is incomplete.

(November 12th). As also Alexander McGlashan in this parish and Elspet Setton (married December 1st day).

Nothing more is known about this couple.

-

John Seaton in Rinroy and Isobel Fraser in Rinroy (unmarried)

Grissel, illegitimate daughter, born 12th September 1738 at Rinroy (Roanroy).

-

Patrick McGlashan and Elspeth Seaton (about 1743, but no known marriage in OPRs)

It is most likely that the bride and groom married in Blair Atholl parish before marriages were listed in the OPR. In addition, there is reason to believe that Elspeth Seaton was the sister of James Seaton in Loinmarstaig.

Patrick McGlashan was one of two miller at Mill of Blair, the other being his brother Alexander McGlashan. The two men were employed by Patrick McGlashan of Lambton who held the tack (lease) for the mill, as well as Tigh Glas - the inn at Blair village.

The first five children were born at Miltown of Blair:
Elspeth, 18th October 1744;
Patrick, 13th September 1746;
Katharine, 15th February 1748;
Neill, 28th February 1750, who died in childhood;
Alexander, 29th April 1751;

The family then moved to the east side of Aldgirnaig which is in Moulin parish, probably to work the mill, and then they moved up to Kionaghleen, near Kirkmichael.

Charles, 2nd January 1753 at Aldgirnaig, who died in childhood;
Beatrix, 15th April 1755 at Kionaghleen;
Charles, 14th Jun 1758 at Aldgirnaig;
Neill, 8th September 1759 at Kionaghleen (but mother given as Isabell Setton, in error)

-

John Stewart and Euphan Seaton (Moulin, 15th December 1743)

(November 25th). Which day John Stewart and Euphan Seaton, parishioners, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objections offered, were married December 15th 1743.

Janet, baptised 16th February 1746 (Moulin OPR) seems to have been their only child, and was born at Ardguie (just east of Edradour).

-

John McLagan and Janet Seaton (Moulin, 15th December 1743)

December 17th. John McLagan and Janet Seaton, parishioners, being legally contracted and proclaimed two several Sabbaths, were married December 29th 1743 years.

The Moulin OPR has an entry for just one child, 9th April 1745, Janet daughter to John McLagan and Janet Seaton in Crofttaraig

Croft-tarig was just to the east of Kinnaird. Nothing more is known about the family.

-

Robert Seton and Christian Fraser (about 1744, but no known marriage in OPRs)

It is most likely that the bride and groom married in Blair Atholl parish before marriages were listed in the OPR. Both Frasers and Seatons lived in the Tenandry area between the river Tummel and the river Garry.

There were at least 7 children from the marriage, the last two being twins.

Christian, 1st August 1745 in Stronchavie;
Janet, 13th March 1748 in Badro;
Katharine, 30th August 1750 in Badro;
Beatrix, 22nd April 1753 in Riechois;
Anne, 16th July 1754 in Badro;
Elizabeth, 28th May 1758 in Cnoc na dilt;
James, 16th November 1760 in Cnoc na dilt;
John, 16th November 1760 in Cnoc na dilt

-

Donald McDougall (MacDougald) and Anne Seaton (Moulin OPR, 18th November 1787)

4th November. Donald McDougall and Anne Setton, both in this parish of Moulin, were booked in order to be proclaimed for marriage. Married 18th current.

-

The Moulin Minister's census of 1805-06 shows the couple living at Ceannaghlinne, where Donald was a farmer. There is an unmarried James Setton, cottar, living close by and he may well be Ann's younger brother, born 16th November 1760.

The Moulin Minister's census of 1820 shows the couple living at the Mill of Farine (cornmill) between Tarvie and Croftnald, where Donald McDougal was a 52 year old cottar and his wife Ann Seaton was 61 years old, and therefore born around 1759.

There is only one baptism recorded in the whole of Perthshire for an Ann Seaton around that date, and it is the daughter of Robert Seton and Christian Fraser baptised in 1754. When she married she was officially nine years older than her husband, and probably fourteen years older than him, making her about 33.

The couple appears to have had only one child, a daughter Anne, born 23rd January 1788, which may explain the age difference between them. She was living with her parents at Ceannaghlinne in 1805.

-

Alexander Fergusson and Margaret Seaton (Moulin OPR, 30th June 1749)

The Moulin OPR is as unhelpful as ever, just stating that both the bride and groom were 'in this parish'. However the baptism of what seems to be their only child is slightly more helpful.

Moulin, 30th May 1758
30th May. Baptised, Sussan to Alexander Fergusson and Margaret Setton (in) Lettochcroy.

One big problem is that another couple with identical names were married in Blair Atholl in 1757, so it is impossible to know which of the two couples are Susan's parents.

Blair Atholl, 22nd November 1757
Alexander Fergusson in Toldamph and Margaret Setton in Toldamph, married.

It is possible that Margaret Setton in Toldamph was the second wife of Alexander Fergusson previously married to Elspeth Ritchie, whose last child was born at Toldamph in 1753.

Both Margaret Seatons should have been born in the late 1720s or early 1730s, but there is only one such baptism recorded in any of the OPRs, that of Margaret, daughter to Alexander Setton and Christian Robertson in Cnoc na dilt, 8th March 1737 (Moulin OPR).

-

John Steuart (Stewart) and Beatrix Seaton (Moulin OPR, 9th February 1754)

John Stewart in Logierait parish and Beatrix Setton in this parish being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered were married.

If the couple did have children, they do not seem to have been recorded in the Logierait OPR or elsewhere in Perthshire.

Beatrix Seaton probably was in her early twenties when she married, but her parents cannot be identified with any certainty.

-

John McLaren and Beatrix (Betty) Seaton (Moulin OPR, 28th June 1754)

8th June. John McLaren and Beatrix Setton, both in this parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered were married.

There is reason to believe that Betty (Elizabeth) Seaton was the sister of James Seaton in Loinmarstaig, and may have been living there at the time of her marriage.

Although the marriage entry names her as Beatrix Setton, the entries relating to the baptisms of her children, give her name as Betty or Elspeth.

Moulin OPR, 28th November 1754
November 28th. Baptised Isabel to John McLaren and Betty Setton in Leekscriadan (in Glengirnaig).

The year 1754 is written above the entry, in the same hand, but appears to have been added later. The entries before it relate to the year 1765 and it is possible that it is the same baptism as Isabel, 15th November 1764.

Moulin OPR, 8th September 1759
Baptised James to John McLaren and Betty Setton in Leekscriadan.

Although the heading for this part of the Moulin gives the year as 1759, there are other entries included which relate to other years

Moulin OPR, 22nd March 1762
Baptised John to John McLaren and Betty Setton in Leekscriadan.

This may be the same baptism as the one for John McLaren, dated 15th March 1763.

-

Robert Robertson and Jean Seaton (Moulin OPR, 30th December 1756)

December 17th, Robert Robertson and Jean Setton both in this parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered, were married December 30th.

All of the children seem to have been born at Dailnacarran

23rd November 1757, Baptised, Donald to Robert Robertson and Jean Setton in Dalnacarron
6th April 1760, Baptised, Isabel to Robert Robertson and Jean Setton in Dalnacarron
David, 16th January 1762
Anne, 25th March 1764
7th December 1766, Baptised, Margaret to Robert Robertson and Jean Setton in Dalnacarron
John, 26th April 1770
Robert, 21st March 1773
Jean, 28th December 1777.

David Robertson, widower of Anne Fergusson, was farming part of Ardgie in 1806 according to the census carried out the Minister of Moulin. His mother, Jean (Jane) Setton and his two sisters Isabel and Jean were also living at Ardgie.

-

Alexander Seaton and Janet McFarlane (Dull OPR, 26th November 1763)

The Dull OPR merely states that Alexander Seaton and Janet McFarlane were 'both in this parish'. There is no evidence that the couple ever had any children, and there does not seem to be a baptismal date for Alexander Seaton. In fact, nothing tangible to go on!

-

Alexander Forbes and Elspeth Setton (Moulin OPR, 2nd January 1766)

December 14th. Alexander Forbes and Elspeth Setton, both in this parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered, were married January 2nd 1766.

Despite living in Logierait parish, the couple maintained their connection with their home parish of Moulin as they registered the baptisms of their children in both the Moulin and Logierait OPRs.

Moulin OPR, September 5th 1767
Baptised, Elspeth to Alexander Forbes and Elspeth Setton in East Haugh, Logierait parish.

Moulin OPR, September 5th 1767
Baptised, Elspeth to Alexander Forbes and Elspeth Setton in East Haugh, Logierait parish.

Moulin OPR, March 2nd 1771
Baptised, John....................................................

Logierait OPR, March 9th 1771
Baptised, John....................................................

Moulin OPR, November 20th 1774
Baptised, to Alexander Forbes and Elspt Setton in East Haugh in parish of Logierait, a son Donald.

Logierait OPR, November 20th 1774
Baptised, Donald..................................................

The entry after Elspeth's baptism is that of Duncan, son to John Forbes in Orchil-more. Is this a clue?

-

Duncan Setton and Helen Stewart (Moulin OPR, 14th June 1768)

May 28th. Duncan Setton amd Helen Stewart, both in this parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered, were married June 14th 1768.

The couple appear to have had no children and the parentage of Duncan Setton is unknown.

-

John Menzies and Margaret Setton (Moulin OPR, 8th February 1771)

January 18th. John Menzies amd Margaret Setton, both in this parish, being legally contracted, booked and proclaimed, and no objection offered, were married February 8th 1771.

Their only children appears to be Janet, 13th January 1772.

-

John Stewart and Janet Setton (Dull OPR, 28th June 1777)

This marriage is recorded in both the Dull and Blair Atholl OPRs. The latter states that John Stewart was living at Balinloan of Shierglas, parish of Dull, while Janet Seton was from Clune-beg in Blair Atholl parish.

There is no record of any Seaton families living at Clune-beg at this time, so it must be assumed that Janet was employed there as a servant.

Two children were born to this marriage, both at Balinloan of Shierglas: Christian, 29th April 1781; and Margaret, 19th October 1783.

In the 1861 census Christian Stewart, aged 77 years, was living at Taybank House where she was servant to Peter Rutherford, retired fisherman. the census confirms that she was born in Dull parish.

Christian Stewart, unmarried domestic servant, died at Stanley in the parish of Redgorton on 18th September 1862, aged 82 years. Her parents were given as John Stewart, flax dresser, and Janet Seton, both deceased. The informant was her nephew Peter Stewart.

Peter Stewart was the son of Thomas Stewart and Margaret Stewart, born 2nd March 1817 in Little Dunkeld parish. In the 1841 census 23-year-old Peter was living at Pitcairngreen in the parish of Redgorton, sharing accommodation with Peter Keir the backsmith, and soon afterwards he married Peter Keir's sister.

Redgorton OPR, 3rd July 1842
Peter Stewart and Margaret Keir, both residing at Pitcairngreen, were proclaimed this day and on the 10th July in order to marriage, and were married the 15th inst.

Peter Stewart's family 1861 census Pitcairngreen.

Dwelling Name Related Status Age Occupation Birthplace

Margaret Keir Stewart wife marr 46y linen finisher Abernethy
Peter Stewart son u/m 10y scholar Redgorton

-

Duncan Seaton and Helen Scott (Logierait OPR, 2nd May 1781)

April 7th. Duncan Seaton in Balagowan and Helen Scott in Pitcastle entered their names (for proclaimation in order to marriage). married at Logierait, 2nd May by Mr Bisset.

Balagowan was about a mile north-east of Moulinearn (Milnearn) and Pitcastle probably was the one half-way between these two places, and not the one just west of Pitnacree.

Logierait OPR, 2nd December 1783
Helen, lawful daughter to Duncan Seaton and Helen Scott in Balagowan (baptised). Born 1st current

There is nothing to suggest that this marriage is linked to any other Seaton family in the Blair Atholl/Dull/Moulin parishes

-

Neil Graham and Margaret Seton (Moulin OPR, 1st June 1782)

Moulin OPR, 1st June 1782
Neil Graham in this parish of Moulin and Margaret Seton in parish of Dull were booked in order to marriage - were married 11th current.

The Dull parish OPR entry gives no additional information.

The couple had two children whose baptisms are recorded in the Moulin OPR:
1st March 1789, baptised, John, son to Neil Graham and Margaret Seton in Stronchavie(?);
Born 18th, baptised 21st July 1801. A daughter to Neil Graham and Margaret Seton his wife in Balnadrum, named Janet.

Balnadrum was just to the south of the village of Moulin and the family were still living there when the Moulin Minister carried out his parish census of 1806-07. Neil was described as the farmer of Balnadrum, which also supported four cottars and a weaver. Neil Graham's children were listed as: Christian, Ann, John, Cecil, Alexander and Jannet.

By the time of the Minister of Moulin's census of 1820, there were no Grahams living in Moulin parish.

The death certificates for Ann and Cecil have been identified.

Annie Robertson, widow of William Robertson, tailor, died at John Street, Blairgowrie, on 17th June 1864, aged 72 years. Parents were given as Neil Graham, farmer, and Margaret Seaton, both deceased. The informant was her sister Cecilia Graham. (Cecilia died the same year).

Logierait OPR, 6th November 1830
William Robertson in Balmenoch of Ballyockan and Anne Graham in Newton of Ballyockan, both in this parish, gave up their names for proclamation of the Banns of Marriage.

The 1841 census for Logierait (5/5) shows 35-year-old Cecilia Graham at Dunfallandy where she was a female servant to Charlotte and Elizabeth Ferguson. The 1861 census for Blairgowrie suggests that Cecilia Graham was born in 1803.

-

John Seaton and Margaret Cameron (Dull OPR, 26th November 1785)

(Note: There is another couple with identical names who married at Little Dunkeld, 2nd August 1801)

John Seton and Margaret Cameron both in the Glen of Fincastle gave up their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage.

The couple do not appear to have had any children, or none were baptised.

-

Donald Seaton and Isabel Stewart (Blair Atholl OPR, 8th February 1786)

Donald Seaton and Isabel Stewart, both in Balintoul, married 8th February 1786.

Their only child appears to have been John who was born at Balintoul, 12th May 1786.

Nothing more is known about this family, however a Christian Seaton in Balintoul married Donald Stewart in Balintoul, 2nd April 1791. This may be just a coincidence, but alternatively Christian may have been Donald's sister.

The parentage of both Donald and Christian have not been elucidated and it may be that neither had their baptism recorded in the Blair Atholl OPR. A number of possibilities for Donald can be eliminated as their life-stories have been established, and the strongest remaining candidate would be the son of John Seaton and Christian McIntosh, born in 1760.

-

Donald Stewart and Christian Seaton (Blair Atholl OPR, 2nd April 1791)

Donald Stewart and Christian Seaton, both in Balintoul, married 2nd April 1791.

The couple do not seem to have had any children, or did not get their baptisms recorded in the Blair Atholl OPR.

Nothing more is known about this family, however a Donald Seaton in Balintoul married Isabel Stewart in Balintoul, 12th May 1786. This may be just a coincidence, but alternatively Donald may have been Christian's brother.

-

Angus Robertson and Grizel Seaton (Moulin OPR, 1st June 1793)

The marriage of Angus Robertson and Girsael Seton is recorded in both the Moulin and Collace OPRs.

Moulin OPR, 1st June 1793
Angus Robertson in the parish of Collace and Girsael Seton in this parish were booked in order to marriage.

Collace OPR, 12th June 1793
Angus Robertson in this parish and Grizel Seaton in the parish of Moulin, after being regularly proclaimed in the audience of the Congregation were married in the parish of Moulin by (blank).

There is no record of any children having been born to the couple, and it is possible that Grizel died soon after marriage as an Angus Robertson in Collace married Isabel Smith, 28th February 1795.

-

Duncan Seaton and Margaret Cameron (Moulin OPR, 14th October 1794)

(Note: There is another couple with identical names who married at Dull, 30th June 1787)

Duncan Seton and Margaret Cameron both in this parish were booked in order to marriage.

The couple moved to the City of Perth where Duncan worked as a tailor.

Perth OPR, 19th September 1798
Perth, Wednesday the nineteenth of September, one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight was born James Seaton, lawful son to Duncan Seaton, tailor in Perth, and Margaret Cameron his spouse, and baptised the twenty-third of September said year by Mr Duncan MacFarlane, Minister of the Gaelic Chapel in Perth.

Duncan Seaton, tailor, died 2nd December 1808, aged 46 years, and was buried at Greyfriars in Perth.

Despite knowing that Duncan Seaton was born around 1760 in the Moulin area, his parentage has not been established. He may have been another son of Duncan Seaton and Christian Stewart in Moulin parish.

Margaret Seaton, spouse of the deceased Duncan Seaton, tailor, died of old age 10th May 1845, aged 88 years, and was buried at Greyfriars in Perth.

The 1841 census for Bridge Street, Perth, shows Margaret Seaton, aged 84 years and independent, living with Grace Seaton aged 42 years who presumably is a daughter. Also living at the same address, maybe as a servant, is Margaret Cameron, aged 67 years. This may be a niece.

-

John Seaton and Ann Ritchie (Dull OPR, 9th June 1804)

The marriage is entered twice in the Dull OPR. John Seaton and Ann Ritchie, both in this parish gave up their names for proclamation in order to marriage. It is assumed that John Seaton was born around 1775 but this cannot be confirmed. If there were any children from the marriage, their baptisms do not appear in any OPR. There are only a few Ritchie people in this area, and perhaps Ann was related to George Ritchie in Blair Atholl parish.

There is a strong possibility that this is the same John Seton who is listed as a tailor at 10 Jamaica Street in the Edinburgh Street Directories from 1819 until 1823. One must wonder if the Edinburgh Street Directories were checked every year for accuracy before being reprinted as John Seton died in early 1820, yet is still listed in the 1822-23 print run.

St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, OPR (deaths) 21st February 1820. John Seton, tailor, died the 19th and was interred here from Jamaica Street on the 21st. Lyes 12 feet east from the north-east corner of Mr Read tomb. Aged 45 years.

John Seton is not a very common name, his age is what would be expected, there is no evidence of him still being in Dull parish, being a tailor would be a profession that he could have used in both Dull and Edinburgh (there is another John Seton in Edinburgh at this time but he was a barber), and John's wife, Ann Ritchie died in Edinburgh in 1830.

St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, OPR (deaths) 27th June 1830. Anne Ritchie, relict of John Seton, died at 148 Rose Street, aged 55 years.

-

Donald McKenzie and Margaret Setton (Blair Atholl OPR, 22nd June 1806)

Donald McKenzie in Coille Bhrochain and Margaret Setton in Fonvuick, married.

Donald McKenzie was the son of James McKenzie and Isabella Ferguson who farmed at Pitfeolain in Glen Fincastle.

The only child from the marriage to have a baptism recorded in the Dull OPR is "Alexander, son to Donald McKenzie and Margaret Seaton in Bonskeid baptised 24th December 1814".

It is worth noting that Donald's sister was married to John Stewart, and was living at Milton of Bonskeid.

It would appear that Margaret Setton had died by 1841 as the census of that year records Donald McKenzie, a 70 year old agricultural labourer, living at Mains of Urrard. Living with him were 35 year old Isabella McKenzie and 8 year old Jane Rutherford.

in 1851 he was still living alone at Urrard and was described as a general labourer and widower of 80 years, born in Dull parish. The 1861 census has him living at Ardtulichan with the family of his nephew Robert McKenzie. He is given as a former gardener, so this explains why he was living at Bonskeid and Urrard. He died at Ardtulichan, 17th March 1863, and his death certificate confirms that he was the widower of Margaret Seaton.

The parentage of Margaret Setton is unknown. Marrying from Fonvuick would suggest that she was the sister of Isobel Seaton, who was living at Fonvuick, when she married James McIntosh, 22nd June 1805. However, it is known that Isobel's sister was unmarried when she died in 1863. She may have been the daughter of Donald Seaton and Margaret Scott in Easter Balrobie as this seems to be the only Seaton family left - so pure speculation!

-

Donald Setton and Helen Menzies (Moulin OPR, 17th March 1807)

The Minister of Moulin's census of 1805-06 shows Donald Setton as farming part of Drumchorrie with two farm servant, John and Margaret Scott. The Minister made a later, undated, addition to the census showing that Donald had married but gave the name of his bride as Elspet Menzies instead of Helen Menzies, in error.

The marriage between Donald Setton and Helen Menzies appears in both the Moulin and Logierait OPRs but the latter is much more informative.

Moulin OPR, 17th March 1807
Contracted 7th March, Donald Setton in this parish and Helen Menzies in the parish of Logierait, married 17th March.

Logierait OPR, 18th March 1807
Contract 8th March. Donald Seaton, farmer in Balnacraig in Moulin parish, and Helen Menzies, servant to John Douglas in West Haugh (of Dalshian) gave up their names for proclamation of Banns in order to marriage. Granted in marriage lines, 16th inst.

There are no known children recorded in the OPRs and the couple do not appear in the Moulin Minister's 1820 census, nor can they be identified in the 1841 census.

Assuming that Donald was about thirty years old when he married, the normal ages for men in those times, and assuming that his birth was recorded in the OPRs, then most likely his parents were Duncan Seaton and Margaret Robertson in Dalginross who married 25th December 1772. Their son Donald was born at Dalginross, 31st July 1778, but the name of the mother is given as Margaret Stewart in error. The baptismal entries for all of the other five children give her name as Margaret Robertson.

If this is the correct Donald, then his brother Alexander served in the 29th (Worcestershire) Foot Regiment from 1801 until 1816. Perhaps Donald also enlisted in the army which could explain why the couple cannot be easily traced. Alternatively, they may have emigrated.

Peter McDougall and Elizabeth Seaton (Dull OPR, 1st May 1808)

The marriage between Peter McDougall and Elizabeth Seaton appears in both the Dull and Moulin OPRs.

Dull OPR, 1st May 1808
Peter MacDougal in the parish of Moulin and Elspeth Seaton in this parish gave up their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage. (The Dull OPR has this marriage entered twice but the wording is virtually identical).

Moulin OPR, 7th May 1808
Peter McDougall in this parish and Elspeth Setton in the parish of Dull, contracted 2nd and married 7th May.

There appears to have been only one child and the baptismal entry in the Moulin OPR follows the entry for John, son to Archibald McBeth (McBeath or McVean) and Margaret Setton, but does not have an exact date.

Moulin OPR, (early January or February?) 1809
A daughter to Patrick McDougal and Elspeth Setton his wife in Achlatt, named Catherine (was baptised).

Nothing more is known about this family and they do not appear in the Moulin minister's census of 1820.

-

John Seaton and Christian MacIntosh (Blair Atholl OPR, 25th December 1808)

John Seton in Woodend and Christian MacIntosh in Baluaine, married 25th December 1808.

The couple seem to have had a single child named Donald who was born at Woodend, 10th February 1810.

John Cameron and Christian Setton (Blair Atholl OPR, 20th June 1813)

John Cameron in Haugh of Blair and Christian Setton in Killandris (Killanders), married 20th June 1813.

John Cameron and Christian Setton had three children born at Ardindeor, which was close to Old Blair village:
John, 25th April 1815;
Duncan, 1st June 1819;
Ann, 29th May 1821

According to the death certificate of his son Duncan, John Cameron was a joiner by trade.

Duncan Cameron and Mary McIntyre, both in Blair Atholl, married 13th December 1840. They moved to Auchtergaven parish by the 1841 census (6/3) and were one of four families living at Five Mile House, next to Gallowhill.

Dwelling Name Age Occupation Birthplace
Five Mile House Duncan Cameron 20y ag. labourer Perthshire
Mary Cameron 20y Perthshire
Catherine Cameron 4m Perthshire

Duncan Cameron, widower of Mary McIntyre and farmer at Broompark, Auchtergaven, died 22nd March 1905 aged 86 years. Parents given as John Cameron, joiner, and Christina Seaton, both deceased. Informant was his son Duncan.

Donald Farquharson and Helen Seaton (Little Dunkeld OPR, 2nd October 1818)

October 2nd. Donald Farquharson in Ballintaggoul and Helen Setton in Inver were this day married, the Session dues being paid and no objections made.

Ballintaggoul does not appear on any map, but may be Ballintagart which is to the west of Balnaguard on the road to Grandtully.

There appear to have been two children born in Little Dunkeld parish: Alexander, 15th November 1818; and Margaret, 26th June 1823.

By the time of the 1841 census Donald and Helen were living at Inchmagranach, just to the north of Inver, but the two children were not recorded.

Dwelling Name Age Occupation Birthplace
Inchmaganach Donald Farquharson 50y labourer Perthshire
Helen Farquharson 40y Perthshire
Betsy Livingston 10y female servt. Perthshire

The couple were still at Inchmagranach in 1851.

Inchmagranach Donald Farguharson head marr 66y woodcutter Little Dunkeld
Helen Farguharson wife marr 53y Little Dunkeld
Margaret Farguharson dau u/m 27y Little Dunkeld

The 1861 census for Little Dunkeld shows the family living at Claypots Farm Cottage.

Dwelling Name Related Status Age Occupation Birthplace
Claypots Farm Cottage Donald Farquharson head marr 75y general labourer Grandtully
Helen Farquharson wife marr 62y Tomgarroul
Margaret Farguharson dau u/m 34y dom. servt. Meikle Trochrie

This census gives Helen's birth-place at Tomgarroul which probably is Tomgarrow. If this is the case then Helen was the daughter.

Helen Farquharson, widow of Donald Farquharson, labourer, died at Ladywell Cottages 19th December 1862 aged 63 years. Parents given as John Seaton, Church Officer, and Margaret Cameron, both deceased. The informant was her daughter Margaret.

There are two couples named John Seaton and Margaret Cameron, so it is not certain which pair were her parents. One couple married in Little Dunkeld parish (1801) and the other couple married in Dull parish (1785).

The 1861 census gives Helen's birth-place at Tomgarroul which probably is Tomgarrow. If this is the case then Helen was the daughter of the couple from Little Dunkeld parish .

The 1871 census shows Margaret Farquharson living alone at Ladywell Cottage, unmarried and aged 55 years. It also says that she was an 'imbecile', probably a bit simple-minded. The brother-in-law of the Episcopalian Minister of Birnum lived at Ladywell House, so he and his wife may have been looking after Margaret as an act of charity.

Alexander Stewart and Christian Seaton (Dull OPR, 16th December 1821)

The Dull OPR gives no hint as to the origin of Christian Seaton, just saying that Alexander Stewart and Christian Seaton were "both in this parish".

Their first child, Robert, was baptised in Dull parish but the family moved to Auchtergaven parish soon afterwards.

Dull OPR, 1st February 1822
Robert, son to Alexander Stewart and Christian Seaton in Milton of Fincastle was baptised 1st February.

Auchtergaven OPR, 14th March 1824
Alexander Stewart, labourer, and Christian Seaton in Bankfoot had a son baptised Peter.

Auchtergaven OPR, 20th January 1826
Alexander Stewart, labourer, and Christian Seaton in Bankfoot had a son baptised John.

Nothing more is known about Robert and John Stewarts, but Peter was in Perth by 1845 when he married Helen Garvie.

Perth the 25th April 1845, contracted Peter Stewart, carpenter in the East Church parish of Perth, and Helen Garvie in said parish, daughter of John Garvie, weaver there - Elder Duncan Duff - the persons before named were regularly proclaimed and married 13th May said year by the Rev. Peter Grant, minister of the Free Gaelic Church in Perth.

The only child whose baptisms is recorded in the Perth OPR is Alexander

Perth OPR, 31st August 1845
Earl's Dykes, East Church parish of Perth, the 10th day of August 1845 as born Alexander, lawful son to Peter Stewart, carpenter in said parish and Helen Garvie his spouse, and baptised 31st August said year by the Rev. Peter Grant of the Free Gaelic Church in Perth.

The 1851 census shows that there was also a son named Robert.

Peter Stewart, married ship carpenter, died at Earl's Dykes in Perth on 27th February 1857 aged 33 years and was buried at Wellshill, Perth. Parents given as Alexander Stewart, labourer, and Christian Seaton, both deceased. The informant was his son Alexander (he could only have been eleven years old).

Helen and the family moved in with Helen's mother, Mary Garvie, as shown in the 1861 census.

Robert Stewart g.son u/m 12y bookseller's apprentice Perth
Christina A. Stewart g.dau u/m 9y scholar Perth

Christian Stewart (Seaton) may have died in Perth 2nd March 1847. The Greyfriars burial ground records her as the spouse of Alexander Stewart, labourer, and aged 57 years. If this is correct then she was born around 1790, but she has not been found in the 1841 census.

-

Robert Stewart and Elizabeth Seaton (Blair Atholl OPR, 3rd June 1832)

It is quite possible that the Blair Atholl Registrar wrote down the wrong name for Robert Stewart's bride, and that it should have been Elizabeth Scott, not Elizabeth Seaton. Robert Stewart and his wife had three children born at Tomnaguie, and in each case the OPR gives the mother's name as Elizabeth Scott. It is possible that Elizabeth Seaton died without producing any children and Robert Stewart remarried. However there is no evidence of a marriage between Robert Stewart and Elizabeth Scott in the whole of Scotland, at this time.

-

Donald Seaton and Isabel Stewart (Blair Atholl OPR, 27th November 1832)

Donald Seaton and Isobel Stewart, both in (Balinluig of) Strathgroy, married.

Perth OPR, 15th November 1840
Canal Street, West Church parish, Perth, the first day of October 1840, was born Peter Seaton, lawful son to Donald Seaton, police officer in the said parish, and Isabella Stewart his spouse, and baptised the 15th day of November said year by the Rev. Charles Stewart, Minister of St Stephen's church, Perth

Nothing more is known about this Seaton family. Donald might be the son of Duncan Seaton and Margaret Cameron (no proof, just living near)
