Alexander Moon, blacksmith in Longforgan

The earliest records of any Moons being in Longforgan are the marriages of Alexander Moon in 1801 and of Isobel Moon in 1807. The closeness of dates would suggest that they were brother and sister but this cannot be confirmed.

Longforgan is one of the few parishes where a register of burials was kept before 1855 and this suggests that Alexander was born around 1777. There are only two Alexander Moons baptised at this time thoughout the whole of Scotland, both in Blair Atholl parish. The first was the son of Duncan Moon and Isobel Gow in 1773, and the other was the son of Alexander Moon and Margaret Fergusson in 1777. Both families also had a daughter by the name of Isabel, but the daughter of Alexander Moon and Margaret Fergusson married Patrick Cattanach (Peter McIntosh) in 1797, and was living at Miltown of Fincastle in October 1801. So, although his age was given as 44 when he died in 1821, he seems to have been born in 1773 at Riechappel in Glen Banvie, Blair Atholl parish.

Longforgan OPR, 20th September 1801
Alexander Moon and Elizabeth Irons, both in this parish were proclaimed in order to marriage. Banns called 20th, 27th and 3rd October. Ultimo (married) 4th October.

The first two children do not seem to have been baptised. They may have been living at Invergowrie. The next six have their baptisms recorded in the Longforgan OPRs. The family were at Balruddery from 1810 and still there in 1821 when Alexander died.

Longforgan OPR, 28th May 1821
Alexander Moon, blacksmith in Balruddery, aged 44, was buried.

Longforgan OPR, 26th May 1840
Elizabeth Irons, wife of Alexander Moon, aged 62, was buried.

John Moon, blacksmith and widower of Elizabeth Anderson, died at 48 Causewayend, Coupar Angus, on 13th April 1895, aged 76 years. His parents were given as Alexander Moon, blacksmith, and Euphemia Cameron (sic), both deceased. The informant was David Smith, his son-in-law.

There is no record of a marriage between any Alexander Moon and a Euphemia Cameron. Neither is there any recorded birth to such parents, so the name of John's mother seems to be a mistake.
