Erected by Margaret Stewart in affectionate memory of her father John Stewart, mason who died in Edinburgh 23rd August 1839 aged 54 years and is interred in the west church yard of that town also of her mother Janet Stewart wife of the above who died at Ballintoul, Blair Athole 7th September 1862 aged 77 years Also of her sister Maggy who died at Dalcroy 1812 aged 3 years Also of her grandfather William Stewart and father of the above John Stewart who died of fever in the year 1809 The last three named are interred here The above Margaret Stewart housekeeper to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales died at Sandringham, Norfolk January 24 1889 in her 66 year and is interred there "Well done thou good and faith full servant. Enter thou into the joy of thy lord" |
Grandfather William Stewart was a tenant farmer at Balnabodach in Strathtummel and was married to Margaret Stewart in Edintian, Dull parish (Balir Atholl OPR, 30th April 1779. John Stewart the mason was his second son, baptised 3rd November 1782.
Janet Stewart's death certificate in 1862, signed by her son, John Stewart, gives her age as 75, instead of the 77 years recorded on the monument. It also gives her parents as John Stewart, farmer, and Christian Campbell. In fact her mother was Christian Cameron and Janet was born at Bruchbane farm, close to Grennich on the north side of Loch Tummel.
Janet's sister Ann was married to James Fraser and their family are commemorated on a memorial stone in the Borenich burial ground.
