The Seatons in Balmhullin-beg (Little Miltown) of Fincastle

Fincastle

James Stobie's map of Glen Fincastle showing Balmhullin-beg (Lit. Milltown) and Tombea of Pitdornie

The first reference to Seatons at Little Miltown of Fincastle comes from the baptism of an illegitimate son.

Dull OPR, 27th May 1745
Donald, natural son to Alexander Seaton and Janet McGregor in Tombea of Pitdornie was baptised. William McGregor, sponsor. John Stewart and William Stewart, witnesses.

William McGregor, who sponsored the baptism, probably was Janet's father as he was a witness to Janet's marriage just a few days later.

Dull OPR, 6th June 1745
Alexander Seaton and Janet McGregor in Fincastle, both in this parish were married. William McGregor and John Stewart, witnesses.

Alexander Seaton and Janet McGregor had the baptisms of two more children recorded on the Dull OPR, but as they are so spread out it is possible that other children were born but not baptised.

Dull OPR, 31st December 1750
(un-named child) to Alexander Seaton and Janet McGregor in Bailvulin-beg was baptised

Dull OPR, 15th April 1757
Elspeth, daughter to Alexander Seaton and Janet McGregor in Dundavie was baptised

The most interesting baptism is that of the un-named child in 1750, as there is another Seaton marriage in the same place that year, suggesting that there were two Seaton brothers at Little Miltown of Fincastle at that time.

John Stewart and Elspet Seaton in Fincastle

There is another Seaton marriage in Glen Fincastle in the 1740s.

Dull OPR, 23rd May 1743
A testificate was given to John Stewart and Elspet Seaton in Fincastle, both in this parish, to be married. John Stewart and John Seaton, witnesses.

There are very few Seatons in Glen Fincastle at this time, and it is possible that Elspet was the sister of Alexander and George Seatons. John Seaton, the witness to her marriage, most probably was her father or, if he was deceased, Elspet's eldest brother.
