Seatons of Craggan to Redgorton

The Blair Atholl OPR shows that Duncan Setton in Easter Craggan and Jean Robertson in Strathgroy married 14th November 1803. (Duncan may have come from Dalginross)

The Perthshire Militia, 1802-04 (PE66/Bundle 10) lists as a militia man in Captain Charles Stewart's Shierglas Company - Duncan Setton, married to Jeannie Robertson in Aldclune, and having no children.

The first two children, Margaret and James, were born at Craggan after which the family moved to the parish of Redgorton. The lack of births between 1809 and 1816 coincides with the Napoleonic Wars.

By 1851 some of the family had moved to Stanley Mills.

On 15th March 1856 at Brick Buildings, Stanley, Euphemia Seaton, cotton mill worker had an illegitimate daughter named Janet. The name of the father is not given on the birth certificate, and the fate of the child is unknown.

By 1861 Euphemia and her sister Janet were still unmarried and living at Wilmington Street, Hutchestown, Lanark. Both were described as working in the cotton factory. They had a lodger, 8-year-old William Aitken who had been born in Auchtergaven. It is possible that this William Aitken was the illegitimate son of William Aitken and Euphemia Seaton, another son Charles is thought to have been born around 1862.

In 1881 Duncan Seaton, 44 years old and unmarried, was living at 190 High Street, Dumbarton where he was a grocer and victualler. His widowed mother Annie, aged 67 was the householder. Ann died in 1883.

Charles Seaton, Colour Sargeant in the Gordon Highlanders

The exact dates of Charles's birth is unknown. His 1855 marriage certificate gives it as 4th December 1815 but, as his younger sister was born March 1816, this cannot be true and most probably he was born the previous year, which would fit other documentation. It is possible that his father was away fighting in the Napoleonic War at the time.

Nothing is known about his childhood in Redgorton parish but in 1832, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the 92nd Foot Regiment (Gordon Highlanders, 2nd Battalion). In 1834 the Regiment was stationed at Gibraltar, but by 1841 were back at Fort George (Ardersier parish). Charles Seaton, aged 25 years, and listed in the census as a corporal. As he is the last on the list, before the drummers, he probably was the most junior corporal.

The Regiment was sent to Barbados in 1841 and returned to Edinburgh in 1844, but Charles Seaton probably wasn't with them as he married his first wife, Mary Ann Taggart in Dundee, 17th October 1843.

In the 1841 census for Dundee, ScotlandsPeople have the family indexed as: Massia Tagart (M), 45y; Mareyan Tagart (F), 16y; Marthew Tagart (F), 12y; and Mases Tagart (M), 10y.

Charles's son Duncan was born in Dundee around 1847. Duncan's death certificate gives his mother as Mary Hay, but this cannot be true as Charles Seaton married Mary Hay in 1855 and was a widower at the time.

From 1848 to 1850 the Regiment were at Conmel in Ireland, and it appears that Mary Ann Taggart travelled with the military as their daughter Janet was born in Ireland (~1851). In all, there were five children born to the couple. Mary Ann Taggart died before 1855. After serving in Ireland the Regiment was sent to the Ionian Islands, and then back to Gibraltar in 1853. The following year Charles Seaton was discharged, aged 40 and returned to Scotland as a Chelsea Pensioner. He had attained the rank of Colour Sargeant denoting that he was senior and longest-serving sargeant in the battalion. His discharge papers give his Regiment, age and place of birth.

On the 8th June 1855 at Clayholes, Perth, C(harles) Seaton, Colour Sargeant living at Pomarium, Perth, aged 40 years, married Mary Hay, living at Clayholes and aged 24 years. Charles was described as a widower with 5 children (all living) from his previous marriage. He was born at Redgorton 4th December 1815, parents given as Duncan Seaton, deceased weaver, and Janet Robertson.

Mary was described as a spinster born in Perth, the daughter of James Hay, wright, and Mary Brodie. Alexander Hay and Barbara Hay witnessed her marriage.

Charles Seaton and Mary Hay had two children, a son Charles who appears to have been born in March 1854, according to his death certificate. Charles died of T.B. a few days after his mother. The couple also had a daughter Barbara who was born and died in 1856. Mary Hay, herself, died of T.B. at 2 Canal Street, Perth, on 4th September 1856, aged only 24 years, and was buried at Greyfriars churchyard.

Charles Seaton married his third wife in 1858 and the marriage certificate states that:

At George Street, on the 15th day of November 1858, Chas. Seaton, Colour Sargeant of the Royal Perthshire Militia, widower aged 44 years and living at 105 South Street Perth, married Ann Ewart, domestic servant, spinster aged 26 years and living at Corsiehill, parish of Kinnoull. His parents were given as Duncan Seaton, weaver, and Janet Robertson, both deceased. Her parents were given as John Ewart, coal salesman, and Helen Cairnie, both deceased. The ceremony was witnessed by George Gatherer and Jessie McLagan.

The 1861 census return for Perth provides the following information.

By the time of the 1871 census the family were living at 114 South Street in Perth.

Janet (Jessie), now aged 21, was employed as a general servant by Major James Menzies (retired) and his family at 73 Victoria Street, Perth.

Charles Seaton, pensioner, married to Anne Ewart died 15th June 1872 at 114 South Street, Perth. His parents were given as Duncan Seaton, weaver, and Anne Robertson. The informant was his son Duncan.

It is quite likely that Duncan Seaton never knew his grand-mother, Janet Robertson, and gave her name as Anne in error.

After the death of his father, Duncan moved the rest of the family into 55 High Street, Perth, where Anne Ewart died of T.B. on 13th February 1873. The informant on the death certificate is given as Duncan Seaton, step-son.

Duncan Seaton and Robina McDougall in Perth

On 16th August 1875 at 20 Lower Greenside Lane Edinburgh, Duncan Seaton, draper's assistant and bachelor aged 29 years, living at 55 High Street, Perth, married Robina McDougall, cloakmaker and spinster, aged 26 years, living at 10 St John's Place, Perth. His parents were given as Charles Seaton, pensioner, formerly colour sargeant Gordon Highlanders and Mary Ann Taggart, both deceased. Her parents were given as Duncan MacDougall and Robina Mitchell Wilkie, both deceased. Witnesses were H. Wilkie and Jessie Seaton.

In 1881 the family were living at 71 High Street, Perth.

Duncan Seaton, retired draper and widower of Robina MacDougall, aged 65 years, dropped dead at 7 High Street, Perth, on 26th August 1911. Usual residence, Clark Street. Parents given as Charles Seaton, Colour Sargeant, Gordon Highlanders and Mary Hay, both deceased. The informant was his son Charles Seaton.

John Seaton and Ann Spence in Hutchesontown, Lanark

John Seaton and Ann Spence married 7th July 1845 (Auchtergaven OPR) and by 1851 they had two children, although neither seems to have been baptised in the parish church.

The family moved to Hutchesontown, Lanark, probably at the same time as John's sisters Janet and Euphemia, and were there in 1861.

Alexander Seaton died in 1869, and in the same year his older brother Duncan married Mary McAra, in Govan. The family were at Tradeston by 1871.

In 1881 the family were living at 66/68 Abbotsford Place, Govan, Lanark.

The Directory for 1880 gives John Seaton as a tobacconist at 66 Abbotsford Place and living at 88 Abbotsford Place.

Alexander Seaton and Ann McDonald in Redgorton

The Redgorton OPR contains only two marriages involving a Seaton and all of the birth relate to just two families. Alexander Seaton married Ann McDonald in 1817 but his identity has not been established. He was too young to be a son of Duncan Seaton and Janet Robertson, but may have been a brother or cousin.

The baptismal entry of their first child in the Redgorton OPR shows that Alexander was a tailor in Redgorton village.

The Redgorton OPR entries for all of the other children are similar, except that by 1830 Alexander was described as a labourer and by 1832 the family had moved to Ruthven.

By 1841 Alexander Seaton's family were living at 'Brick Buildings', next to Mill Street in Stanley. There were eight families living in No 4. Alexander Seaton probably was deceased.

The 1851 census shows Ann and her family living at Store Street, Stanley, but probably this is the same address as 'Brick Buildings'.

Ann Seaton was also boarding out rooms to three lodgers from Ireland. Her daughter Margaret had married Peter Cunningham 17th August 1849. At some time between 1851 and 1856 Ann's family moved to Lanark and were living at 55 Commercial Road. The other Seaton family from Redgorton also moved at the same time and were living at 135 Commercial Sreet.

Elizabeth Seaton, unmarried factory worker aged 28 years, died of typhus with pneumonia at Glasgow Royal Infirmary on 15th October 1856. Her usual residence was given as 55 Commercial Road, Glasgow. Her parents were given as Alexander Seaton, tailor (pensioner) and Ann McDonald, both deceased. The informant was her sister Margaret Cunningham who was living at 51 Commercial Road, Glasgow. She was buried in the Southern Necropolis.
