Genealogical Record of Patrick Stewart of Miltown (Ballavulin) of Borenich.

Patrick Stewart was born 17th September 1752, the son of Alexander Stewart in Knockgarry, Factor to John Stewart, 8th of Bonskeid.

Blair Atholl, 1752
Alexander Stewart in Knockgharie and Margaret Stewart his wife had a child born September 17th, baptised 22nd, named Patrick

Patrick's elder brother, Charles, and Marjory Stewart in Ardtulichan were proclaimed for marriage at Blair Atholl on 19th November 1773. As eldest son, Charles would be expected to eventually take over the lease for Knockgarry, and if Patrick married there would not be enough room to support two families. Knockgarry probably was being rebuilt in 1776 as Charles and Marjory's second child was born at Uchdnanetaig, before the family moved back into Knockgarry. Patrick moved from Knockgarry to the adjacent homestead of Balcastle at around the same time, and this is where Patrick was living when he married Jean Stewart.

Blair Atholl, 1776
Patrick Stewart in Balchastel and Jean Stewart in Kirkton of Struan (married) 15th February.

The couple had nine children between 1776 and 1796, and the size of the family increased Patrick moved his family to Nethertown of Borenich. Nethertown of Borenich was also called Balinloin in early documents and is shown on James Scobie's map of 1783 as Laightown. The name of the homestead seems to change to Miltown of Borenich between 1785 and 1790, which may indicate the date that the mill was built. Linen was woven in Strathtummel right up until the 1850s, and the 1841 census shows that Isabella Robertson and Ann Kennedy in Tomanbuie were lint spinners, suggesting that the lint mill was still in use.

Blair Atholl, 1776
Patrick Stewart in Balacastle and Jean Stewart his wife had a child born the nineteenth, baptised the twenty third of November, named Alexander

Blair Atholl, 1778
Patrick Stewart in Balchastle and Jean Stewart his wife had a lawful son born the seventeenth and baptised the twentieth of July, named James

Blair Atholl, 1779
Patrick Stewart in Borenich and Jean Stewart his wife had a son born December 18th, baptised 22nd, named Patrick

Blair Atholl, 1783
Patrick Stewart in Borenich and Jean Stewart his wife had a son born 9th of May and baptised 13th, named Charles

Blair Atholl, 1785
Patrick Stewart in Nethertown of Borenich and Jean Stewart his wife had a child born 9th and baptised 13th May, named Margaret

Alexander 'Ban' Stewart

It is thought that Alexander 'Ban' Stewart married Margaret McFarlane shortly before they emigrated to Nova Scotia. The Fortingall OPR seems to record this marriage but there are a couple of strange points. Firstly the same entry appears for the 8th March 1801 and also the 5th April 1801.

Fortingall, 1801
Alexander Stewart and Margaret Stewart both in Craganour in this parish (married) 8th March
Alexander Stewart and Margaret Stewart both in Craganour in this parish (married) 5th April

The second oddity is that Alexander Stewart was living at Craganour, Fortingall and not in his home parish. As eldest son, he would have been expected to take over the tenancy after his father's death. Certainly, the family had not been evicted as the youngest son, James 'Ban', was still living at Miltown of Borenich when he married in 1826.

One explanation put forward, has been that Alexander's mother died after the birth of James 'Ban' in 1796, and that in the following year his father married a woman from Fortingall parish. Afterwards both Patrick and his son, Alexander 'Ban', were living in the parish of Fortingall. This suggestion is supported by an entry in the Fortingall OPR.

Fortingall, 1797
Peter Stewart in the parish of Blair in Athole and Janet McFarlane in this parish (married) 15th September.

However, considering the young ages of Patrick's children, one might have expected the new bride to have taken over the family in Blair Atholl. There are no recorded births in Blair Atholl from this marriage.

A genealogical note by one of Alexander's descendant states that "our great, great grandfather Peter Stewart married a second wife called McFarlin but had no children, but a niece that she adopted - Margaret McFarlin. Our great grandfather, Alexander Stewart, married Margaret McFarlin, the adopted daughter of his step-mother."

Another possibility is that Alexander was in hiding. On 19th January 1799, Alexander Stewart of Milntown of Bourannoch came before the magistrates in Perth to claim illegal enlistment (Militia Petition Record PE 66/11). "Stewart thought he was being signed up as a servant to a gentleman in Edinburgh, whereas he was signing up for the army. He has to pay smart money to be released (from the 1st Battalion, Royal Regiment)". Those involved with the case were Lieutenant John Moon, Sir Vere Hunt's regiment, Captain Blair, 1st Royals, Thomas Mill, vintner in Perth and John Cameron.

Whatever did happened, Alexander Stewart, tenant and Margaret Stewart, spinster appear on the emigrant passenger list of the 'Dove' which sailed from Fort William to Pictou, Nova Scotia in June 1801. They were the only passengers from Blair Atholl on the ship. They arrived in September 1801, spending some years in Pictou and the East River St. Marys area before arriving at Lochaber Lake in 1815, where they prospered and raised a large family.

Alexander 'Ban' Stewart and his wife, Margaret McFarlane, are both buried in the North Lochaber cemetery and she is commemorated on a tombstone there (Find-a-Grave, FAG 157974692).

Patrick (Peter) Stewart

Patrick Stewart married Isabella 'Nellie' Cameron, but the place and date are unknown. Luckily his monument in the West River cemetery says that he emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1801, the same year as his older brother. As his eldest child, Jane, was born in 1813, this suggests that Patrick had been in Nova Scotia for some time before he married Isabella Cameron.

Patrick Stewart and Isabella Cameron are buried in the Stewart cemetery at West River Station, as are their children Peter, Mary and Robert, together with Robert's wife Eliza McDonald.

One curious coincidence is that the following entry can be found in the Blair Atholl OPR.

Blair Atholl, 1819
Patrick Stewart in Milntown of Borennich and Margaret Cameron in Pitcastle, parish of Logierait married August 8th.

Obviously this is a different Patrick Stewart of Milltown of Borenich who is marrying a Cameron, but who is he in this small community? Possibly this is his cousin Patrick (b 20 June 1782), the son of Charles Stewart of Knockgharie.

As already mentioned, the mill was probably built between 1785 and 1790 by Patrick Stewart. Patrick Stewart's son James died in childhood and another son, Charles, drowned in a river, so that when Alexander 'Ban' and Patrick jnr both emigrated in 1801, his oldest remaining son, John, would have been only eleven years old. Under these circumstances it is probable that his brother Charles, or Charles's son helped him with the processing of the flax.

James 'Ban' Stewart

The youngest son, James 'Ban' married twice. His first wife was Margaret Stewart

Blair Atholl, 1820
James Stewart in Borenich and Margaret Stewart in Calvine (married) 6th August.

The couple had two children, Peter and Girsel (Grace), but Margaret Stewart died soon after the birth of Girsel.

Blair Atholl, 1821
James Stewart in Milltown of Borenich and Margaret Stewart his wife had a son born May 12th, baptised 16th, named Peter

Blair Atholl, 1823
James Stewart in Milltown of Borenich and Margaret Stewart his wife had a daughter born May 28th, baptised 30th, named Girsel

After the death of his first wife, James 'Ban' married Janet Stewart, the daughter of John Stewart and Grissel Stewart of Balcastle who had moved to Knockgarry around 1805. When James 'Ban' and Janet Stewart emigrated to Canada in 1833, Peter and Grisel would have been twelve and ten years old, respectively. Although A. S. Ross's "Genealogical Record of the Loch Tummel Branch of the Clan Stewart (1712 - 1912)" does not mention them as is concerned only with the family of Janet Stewart, we know that Peter and Grisel were with them as part of the family.

Peter married Isabella Stewart, daughter of 'Big' John Stewart on the 14th July 1851. The couple settled on the Pugwash River where they had eight children: Annie (1852); John Allen (1852); Margaret (1857); Grace Elizabeth (1859); Janet MacDonald (1861); Mary Jane (1864); Isabella Christy (1867); and James R. (1871).

Gravestones in the Palmerston Pugwash cemetery record that Peter died 2nd December 1882, aged 62 and that his wife, Isabella, was born 6th March 1828 and died 27th march 1911, aged 83.

Girsel, or Grace, married Malcolm MacKinnon and lived in Lochaber with her husband. There is a gravestone in the North Lochaber cemetery next to the Stewart family stones which records that Grace McKinnon died 20th December 1900 aged 77. There is no mention of her husband.

Donald McNaughton and Jane Stewart of Lochaber, N.S.

Donald's parents were Alexander McNaughton and Katharine McNaughtan (not Katharine Campbell as appears on some genealogies). The Fortingall OPR shows that Alexander McNaughtan in Moar and Catharine McNaughtan in Ross, both in this parish, entered their (names) for proclamation, dated 8th February 1794.

Moar

James Stobie's map of 1783 showing the settlements of Moar and Ross

Moar is shown as Easter and Wester More on James Stobie's map of Perthshire (1783), while the early Ordnance Survey maps name them as Mòr Shios (Lower or Wester) and Mòr Shuas (Upper or Easter). The homestead of Ross (a double 's' being signified by 'fs') was on the opposite side of the river Lyon. Both were far down the glen, beyond Bridge of Balgie and Meggernie castle.

There has been some confusion concerning the children of Alexander McNaughton. Firstly, Donald McNaughton in Lochaber Nova Scotia has a memorial inscription stating that he was 60 years old when he died in May 1861, showing that he was born around 1801. This would fit with him being the son of Alexander McNaughton and Katharine (or Catherine) McNaughton. However, as some of the parish baptismal records missed out the maternal surname if it was identical to the father, a misunderstanding arose, suggesting alternative surnames for Alexander's spouse.

18th January 1795, Fortingall OPR
Christy, daughter to Alexander and Catharine McNaughtans (in) Moire (was baptised).

The birth, and presumably baptism, of their daughter Mary appears in the Logierait OPR on the page dated 1799, which seems to be the correct year. As this was a mission church and not the parish church, it is quite obvious that the baptism details were collected and written in the OPR at a later date. This particular page (1799) also has N.B. entries dated 1801 which follow earlier baptisms for the same families in 1799. The MacNaughton entry is the last one before the date 1800, showing that a new year was being recorded.

7th May 1799, Logierait OPR
Mary, lawful daughter to Alexander MacNaughton and Katharine MacNaughton in Easter Carie was born May 7th.

The reason for the baptisms being in the Logierait OPR is that Carie, although at the eastern end of Loch Rannoch and nowhere near Logierait village, was in a detached section of Logierait parish for historical reasons based on land ownership.

8th June 1801, Logierait OPR
Donald, lawful son to Alexander McNaughton, weaver, and Katharine McNaughton in Easter Carie was born June 8th.

The next two children, twin boys, had their baptisms recorded in both the OPRs of Fortingall and Logierait.

13th April 1804, Fortingall OPR
Finlay and Robert, twins to Alexander and Catharine McNaughtans in Aldauidh (were baptised).

13th April 1804, Logierait OPR
Finlay and Robert, twins to Alexander McNaughton and Katharine McNaughtan (in) Carie was born April 26th.

Aldauidh is not shown on Stobie's map but does appear on the first O.S. map, where it is named as Altruigh and is located about a mile and a half east of Carie. The settlement consisted of a large building with kailyard attached to a large paddock, with a small house and outhouse on the opposite of the road. It was only just inside the Logierait parish boundary, which was marked by the Allt Druidhe burn which flowed into Loch Rannoch beside the settlement.

The reason for the baptisms being in both parish OPRs is unclear. It may be just an arguement over the precise boundary of Logierait parish, but it is unlikely to be linked to Alexander McNaughton's original residence in Glenlyon.

As the family were settled at Easter Carie it is almost certain that Alexander McNaughton would have known Alexander 'Ban' Stewart in Craganour, as both families would have been attending the same missionary church at Kinloch Rannoch.

Donald McNaughton and Jane Stewart in Lochaber, N.S.

The circumstances and date at which Donald McNaughton emigrated to Nova Scotia are uncertain. Normally, as emigration was a complete upheaval, a single man would not emigrated on his own. A married man would have the support of his wife and family, but for an un-married man the options were rather limited. He could quickly marry if he could find a girl with the spirit for adventure, or he could emigrate with friends or relations. Alternatively he could rely upon the goodwill of relatives already settled in the new country. In addition he would need money to pay for the passage out, temporary accommodation upon arrival, and to purchase land or a place to settle.

One possibility for Donald's benefactors comes from 'A History of the County of Antigonish' Nova Scotia by Rev. D. J. Rankin, Toronto 1929. He mentions that a Donald MacNaughton from Perthshire, married to Christy MacDonald, was settled at Loch Catherine, possibly before 1840. This seems to be the same person as the Donald McNaughton, born 1779, who came from Glenlyon and settled as a farmer in Antigonish Co. around 1826. Both had a son John, born around 1807. As the parents of the emigrating Donald were both McNaughtons from Glenlyon, this may have been a relative.

It is known that Donald McNaughton purchased the 200 acres of land, originally granted to Thomas Muirhead, on the west side of Lochaber Lake (also called Loch Catrine in some documents). Thomas Muirhead died in 1825 as shown by his monument inscription in the Old Burying Ground, Halifax, Nova Scotia, so Donald probably emigrated in the late 1820s. By September 1831 he had married Jame Stewart, the daughter of Alexander Stewart who had land just five plots to the north.

After Donald McNaughton married Jane Stewart in September 1831 at Lochaber Lake, they raised a large family of six girls and four boys, but two of the boys died in childhood. From the bequests in his Will, he seems to have been a very successful farmer. Donald McNaughton died 1st May 1861 and was interred in the North Lochaber Cemetery. His large memorial stone states that he was 60 years old.

Donald McNaughton made out his Last Will and Testament on 22nd March 1861, the tenor of which follows:

"In the name of God, Amen, I Donald McNaughton of Lochaber in the County of Sydney and Province of Nova Scotia, farmer, being weak in body but sound in mind do make and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament.

John McNaughton and Betsey Cameron, Guysborough Co., N.S.

John McNaughton married Betsey Cameron on 19th February 1867, by licence at the Baptist Church, Sherbrooke. He was described as a 29 year old farmer and batchelor living at North Lochaber, the son of Donald McNaughton, a farmer, and Jane (Stewart). She was described as a 28 year old spinster living in Lochaber Lake, the daughter of William Cameron, farmer. The witnesses were William Tate (his brother-in-law) and Hugh Cameron.

John McNaughton's second wife was Grace Stewart who he married on 2nd December 1901, by licence at the Baptist Church, Sherbrooke. He was described as a 62 year old farmer and widower living at Lochaber Lake where he was born, the son of (Donald) McNaughton, a farmer, and Jane Stewart. Robert McNaughton and Sarah Pushie in Goldenville, Guysborough Co., N.S.

Robert McNaughton's first wife was Sarah Pushie who was born in Antigonish, 1840. She died after childbirth 26th March 1872 amd was buried at the Riverside Cemetery, Sherbrooke where there is a stone memorial. The child, Robert McNaughton, died three days later.

Robert's second wife was Caroline 'Carrie' McKenzie who he married 27th February 1873 at the Sherbrooke baptist church. He was described as a 38-year-old widower and she was a spinster aged 23 years.

There is litle doubt that Robert McNaughton was involved in the Nova Scotia gold rush. In 'Tales from the Rush' it is recounted that:

"The discovery and pursuit of gold has always been shrouded in suspense, intrigue and high adventure; Nova Scotia was no exception. Nelson Nickerson of Sherbrooke, for example, visited Tangier in the summer of 1861 and learned to distinguish quartz from other rocks. He returned home later in the season to make hay on his farm — but was careful to inspect every rock and boulder in his fields, breaking the suspicious ones open with a hammer; before long, he discovered gold.

The Nickerson family kept this a close secret, but in a district swept by gold fever, the most innocent of activities drew intense interest. The neighbours began to suspect that Nelson had indeed found gold, and his entire family was closely watched for weeks. In early October the neighbours were rewarded by the muffled sound of Nickerson's hammer; within days, more than two hundred people converged on Sherbrooke, and in a single day of smashing quartz it was estimated that gold worth $400 was extracted — a significant sum for that time".

In 1885, the Sims lead was opened over a length of 274.3 metres by Robert McNaughton and 2,759 ounces of gold were recovered. This mine proved to be the site with, by far, the most mining activity in East Rawdon. McNaughton was also involved in gold mining in places: in Lower Seal Harbour; Sherbrooke; and Stormont.

Between 1895-1907 most production came from the Bluenose Gold Mining Company in the eastern part of the district. The Springfield Vein was the biggest Bluenose producer and the second most important vein was the McNaughton."

The Directory for Goldenville lists R. McNaughton as an 'amalgamator'. So it can be assumed that he was extracting gold from the crushed quartz by dissolving the metal in mercury and then distilling off the mercury, for re-use. Profitable, but potentially hazardous!

Hiram Weeks and Mary McNaughton in Osterville, Massachusetts

Mary McNaughton married Hiram Weeks in Boston, Massachusetts, on 29th January 1879. This was Hiram Weeks's second marriage and he gave his age as 50y. Mary McNaughton (Norton) was 36 years old. Hiram's first marriage was to Celestia B. Fuller, but she died in 1870, leaving him to bring up four children. There was, only one child from his second marriage - May, who was born in 1881. Mary McNaughton has a memorial inscription in the Hillside Cemetery, Osterville (FAG - 41485024).

Hiram Weeks was the younger brother of Capt. Seth Weeks who, as a young man, had been on the whaling ship 'Essex'. A whale attacked the ship in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the death of most of the crew. Luckily Seth survived and the incident is said to have been the inspiration for the book 'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville.

George Dickson and Isabella (Bella) McNaughton in Wine Harbour, N.S.

Although family sources claim that she was born in 1846, her monument inscription in Mountain View Cemetery, California, (FAG-175744937) claims that it was 1853, which would accord with her marriage licence.

Bella McNaughton married George Dickson on 5th January 1886, by licence at the Presbyterian Church, Wine Harbour. He was described as a 32 year old carpenter and bachelor living at Sorona where he had been born, the son of George Dickson, a carpenter (for a ship-builder), and Mary (Sutters).
