Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron in Tulloch Farm, PEI

In association with Marlene Chisholm who is researching the Stewart families who settled on Prince Edward Island

Upper Glenlyon

Map of Upper Glenlyon. Fortingall parish church is next to the Roman Camp on the right hand side.

Peter Stewart and his family emigrated to PEI in 1808 aboard the 'Clarendon'. The passenger list gives him as a 51-year-old labourer, accompanied by his wife Ann, aged 50, and three children: Ann, aged 16; John, aged 13; and Niel, aged 10. Their former residence was given as (Blair) Athole, Perthshire.

This appears to have been a very bold step. He was relatively old to be starting a new life in Canada, especially as his two sons were not adults. In addition it would appear that he was leaving older members of his family behind, unless they had already emigrated as an advance party.

Peter Stewart seems to have lived for most of his life in the parish of Fortingall. If the passenger list is correct and Peter had been born around 1757, then he was the son of Hugh Stewart, which was also the name of his eldest son.

Fortingall OPR, 3rd June 1757
Patrick, son to Hugh Stewart and Christian McDiarmaid in Rasgich was baptised.

Rasgich is not an instantly recognisable settlement on any map, but these were Gaelic-speaking people having the name of their dwelling written down as it sounded to the registrar.

A second problem exists, in that the registrar accidently recorded the name of Peter's mother as Christian McDonald, instead of Christian McDiarmaid (which has various spellings). As evidence, the following entries show the baptisms of Peter's siblings before and after his birth.

Fortingall OPR, 10th May 1753
John, son to Hugh Stewart and Christian McDiarmaid in Raisgich was baptised.

Fortingall OPR, 1st March 1761
Donald, son to Hugh Stewart and Christian McDiarmaid in Rasgich was baptised.

Fortingall OPR, 17th May 1767
Christian, daughter to Hugh Stewart and Christian McDiarmaid in Rasgich was baptised.

Fortingall OPR, 26th August 1770
Neil, son to Hugh Stewart and Christian McDiarmaid in Reasgich was baptised.

It is worth noting that on the same day that Donald was baptised, John Stewart in Rasgich had a daughter baptised. John Stewart may be the brother of Hugh Stewart but, as earlier records of baptisms and marriage in Fortingall do not exist, this cannot be confirmed.

Fortingall OPR, 1st March 1761
Christian, daughter to John Stewart and Margaret Stewart in Rasgich was baptised.

Rasgich probably is the settlement named Rouskich in lower Glenlyon. There are no relevant monument inscriptions in the Fortingall churchyard and nothing is known about the rest of Hugh's family.

Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron, both in this parish, gave up their names (in order to marriage).

Loch Tay

Map of north side of Loch Tay between Bridge of Lochy and Lawers, showing the position of Tomachrocher

Although the baptisms of their children were recorded in the Fortingall OPR, the family were actually living on the north side of Loch Tay which is part of Kenmore parish. However, they probably considered themselves as belonging to Fortingall parish, and besides it would have been much closer than that of Kenmore. Their first child, Christian, was born at Tomachrocher which is a few miles east of Bridge of Lochy.

Fortingall OPR, 25th January 1785
Christian, daughter to Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron in Tomachrocher (baptised).

Christian Stewart died soon after birth and when another daughter was born, she was given the same name. By this time the family had moved to Larichloist. The exact location of this place has not been found, but the ending 'loist' indicates a dwelling place and Lochan a' Larich is just north of Tomachrocher.

Fortingall OPR, 29th December 1786
Christian, daughter to Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron in Larichloist (baptised).

Fortingall OPR, 29th December 1788
Hugh, son to Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron in Larichloist (baptised).

Fortingall OPR, 28th November 1790
Margaret, daughter to Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron in Larichloist (baptised).

Fortingall OPR, 12th August 1791
Ann, daughter to Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron in Larichloist (baptised).

At some time between 1791 and 1798 the family moved to the parish of Blair Atholl and were living at Tulloch when their last child was born. It is thought that this was Tulloch of Glenerrochty, rather than the Tulloch opposite Blair Castle. During this time another son, John, was born but his baptism is not recorded in any of the OPRs.

Blair Atholl OPR, 20th June 1798
Neil, son to Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron in Tulloch.

In addition to the previously mentioned children, in the book 'Marshfield - A Grand Legacy' it is stated that the eldest son of Peter Stewart and Ann Cameron was born in 1782 and baptised as Peter. "Peter Stewart b. 1782 in Scotland; d Jul 16 1843 on PEI; m. Christiana Stewart. Peter, his wife Christina and Peter's sister Margaret arrived on PEI before Peter's parents and other siblings. Both Peter and Christianna are buried in Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery". Peter's date of birth comes from the monument inscription in the cemetery stating that he was aged 61 years in 1843. There is no doubt that Peter Stewart snr. and Peter Stewart jnr. leased parts of Tulloch farm, but the relationship between the two men is in question.

Firstly, if Peter Stewart jnr. was born in 1782 then he was illegitimate as Peter Stewart snr. and Ann Cameron married in 1784, and there is no OPR entry for the baptisms of a Peter as a 'natural' son. Secondly, if he was the eldest son, one would expect him to be named Hugh after his paternal grandfather. Thirdly, if Peter jnr. is ignored, then the eldest son of Peter Stewart snr. is the Hugh born in 1788. Fourthly, as Peter Stewart snr had two daughters born in 1785 and 1786, together with Hugh in 1788, then Peter could not have been born until 1789 and emigrating to PEI as a married man in 1807 or 1808 seems improbable.

Returning to the Blair Atholl OPRs there is no record of a marriage for a Peter Stewart in Tulloch. However there is one for a Christian Stewart in Tulloch who married Peter Stewart in Borenich, dated 15th March 1807. The logical conclusion must be that Peter Stewart jnr. was a son-in-law, rather than a son.

In terms of logistics it is thought that Peter Stewart jnr., his wife Christian and sister-in-law Margaret emigrated to PEI in 1707, soon after the marriage. This would have allowed them time to find temporary accommodation, anticipating the arrival of the rest of the family the following year. Peter Stewart jnr. also acquired a lease on Tulloch farm, on behalf of himself and his father-in-law, from the Montgomery family on 2nd July 1808. This was a month before Peter Stewart snr. and the rest of his family left Blair Atholl to board the 'Clarendon' at Tobermory via Oban.

John Plaw's map of 1811 shows that the 100 acres of farmland tenanted by Peter Stewart jnr. previously had been leased by Hugh McCormack. The Montgomery papers refer to these as Lots 194 and 197 as a tributary of the Hillsborough river splits the property. Peter Stewart snr. had the 100 acres of Lot 195 previously tenanted by Laughlan McIsaac. Both properties may have had timber houses already erected by the previous tenants. The whole farm was called Tulloch, but later writers have also named the area at the intersection of York Road and St. Peter's Road as 'Five Mile House'.

By 1833 the Montgomery papers show that both men were in rent arrears, Peter Stewart snr. by £20 2s 8d, and Peter Stewart jnr. by £46 9s 6d. If these were typical farms, then they were still clearing woodland to extend their arable land. Peter Stewart snr. died three years later.

Peter Stewart jnr. and Christian Stewart in Tulloch Farm, Lot 34, PEI

As previously mentioned, it is thought that Christian Stewart married Peter Stewart on 15th March 1807. She was living at Tulloch in Blair Atholl parish with her parents, but the Blair Atholl OPR is vague about where Peter Stewart was living. It just says 'in Borenich' which is a small area on the north side of Loch Tummel, at the east end of the loch. The various settlements in Borenich are: Balcastle; Balchapel; Balintochich; Balnald of Borenich; Croftcarnach of Borenich; Knockgarry; Miltown of Borenich; Tomanbuie; and Uchdnanetaig.

Peter is said to have been born in 1782, and the baptismal name of Peter (or Patrick) is one of the less common ones. Peter's eldest son was named Charles while his second eldest daughter was given the name of Marjory (May). If all of these factors are taken into account, then the most likely parents for Peter are Charles Stewart in Knockgarry and Marjory Stewart in Ardtulichan who were proclaimed for marriage, 19th September 1773. Patrick was their fifth child and fourth son, born 29th June 1782.

The 1841 census shows that the farm was of 150 acres, 30 acres of which were arable, and was leased at an annual rent of £7 10s. The main crop was potatoes (800 bushels), followed by oats (200 bushels), barley (40 bushels) and wheat (30 bushels). The livestock included 3 horses, 16 cows, 30 sheep and 20 hogs. The family consisted of: 1 male aged 45-60 years (Peter); 1 female aged 45-60 years (Christian); 4 males aged 16-45 years (Charles, Hugh, John and Peter); 2 females aged 16-45 years (the twins Margaret and Catherine); 1 boy aged under 16 years (Alexander); and 1 girl aged under 16 years (Jane). By 1841 both Ann and Margery had married. of

The Last Will and Testament of Peter Stewart jnr. provides an insight into how the family had prospered.

This is the last Will and Testament of me, Peter Stewart, senior, of Tulloch Farm on Lot or Township number thirty four in Queens County, Prince Edward Island, farmer, as follows:

First, I direct that my just and lawful debts and funeral expenses be paid by my Executor, hereinafter named, as soon as the same can be conveniently done after my decease, and with respect to the worldly estate wherewith it has pleased Almighty God in his good Providence to bless me, I give, devise and bequeath the same in manner following, that is to say, I give, devise and bequeath unto my son Peter all my right title, term of years and leasehold, interest or other estate, in and to the farm and premises whereon I now live, containing one hundred acres, situated on the said Township, number thirty four;

Also, all my estate in the fifty acres next adjoining the property of Charles Braddock and situated to the eastward thereof, with all buildings, improvements and appurtenances to the said several tracts of land belonging, which said leasehold tract of fifty acres, I value at one hundred pounds, and have subjected my said son Peter to the payment of several legacies to his brothers and sisters as hereinafter mentioned in consequence of my devise thereof to him.

Also, I bequeath to my infirm son Hugh, four pounds a year, from the time of my decease during his natural life, to be paid to him by my said son Peter, the first payment to be made within six years after my decease, without interest and yearly afterwards.

Also, to his brother Charles fourteen pounds of like currency to be paid within ten years next after my decease, and all the legacies to bear no interest if paid as they become due, and only interest after due and unpaid after request. And it is my will that all the devises and legacies given and bequeathed in and by my will should rest in interest upon, and at the time of my decease in favour of the respective devises and legatees

Also, I direct that my son Alexander do remain and reside with his brother Peter until he my son Alexander attains the age of twenty one years, and assists on the farm all in his power, and that Alexander receive schooling for three years at least from this date, to be paid for by his brother Peter if not paid at my decease.

Also, I give, devise and bequeath all my estate and interest whatsoever in the one hundred acres of land which I have on Township No. 33 in the said Island, and which adjoins to Alexander Stewart's land, to my son Charles. Also the south-east corner of my aforesaid Town Lot in Charlotte Town, with the buildings and improvements thereon, being one third of the Lot, and having one half the front of said Lot on the south and east sides thereof, and the remaining third part of the said Lot I give and devise in fee to my said daughters Catherine and Margaret, to hold as tenants in common.

Also, I give, devise and bequeath to my son John, all my estate and interest in the one hundred acres of land whereon a mill is erected on the said Township No. 33, with the said mill, mill-dam, watercourses and all improvements and appurtenances thereto belonging, and I direct that my said son John shall decently maintain and support his infirm brother, my said son Hugh, during the term of his natural life, if he shall so long reside with his brother John, but if not, then John shall pay to or for his brother Hugh, ten pounds currency aforesaid, or half in produce yearly in lieu of all necessaries and provision while he so lives away from him. And if my said son Hugh shall happen to die in the lifetime of his said brother John, then it is my further will, and I do hereby direct that my said son John shall afterwards during his own natural life, pay to his brother Charles six pounds, and to his brother Alexander, four pounds of currency aforesaid, or half in produce yearly during their natural lives, if he shall so long live, and in return the said last mentioned legatees while receiving the benefit of said legacies are to assist in keeping up and repairing the said mill dam, or otherwise helping their brother John as they best can, about the mill and premises.

Also, I gave an devise to my said son Alexander, the one hundred acres I have on the Union Road adjoining to Lawrence Delany's land, with all my estate and interest whatsoever therein, and I give and bequeath a horse, two cows and four sheep to each of my sons, Charles and Alexander, to be fairly chosen from my livestock left at my decease.

Also, I direct that my son Peter do pay my Pew Rent in the Scotch Church in Charlotte Town for five years after my decease, giving my family the same use of the pew as they now have, and afterwards all who use it to pay a fair proportion of the Rent. And I hereby constitute my said son Peter Stewart residuary devise and legatee of my Estate of what nature or kind soever the same may be and not herein devised or bequeathed, and I do appoint my said son Peter sole Executor of this my Will, hereby revoking all former Wills and Codicils by me at any time heretofore made, declaring this only to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this fourteenth day of July in the year of Our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty three.

Peter Stewart jnr. died two days later and was buried in the Five Mile House Burying Ground, later called the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery. There is a monument inscription to him and his wife which reads: "In memory of Peter Stewart, died July 16th 1843, aged 61 years. Also his wife Christy Stewart, died May 8th 1869, aged 84 years".

The reverse (or is it a similar stone?) has an inscription to members of their family: "In memory of Charles Stewart, died February 16th 1877, aged 69. Hugh Stewart, died April 26th 1880, aged 70. Also Peter, son of Peter and Christy, died June 8th 1893, aged 72. Also Ann Stewart, wife of Duncan Ferguson, died February 15th 1858, aged 47. Also Jane Stewart, died January 7th 1868, aged 43.

Peter Alexander Stewart in Harrington, Lot 33, PEI

Marshfield - A Grand Legacy relates that "the last burials in this old cemetery (Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery) were that of James Fraser aged 66, and Peter A. Stewart, known as Peter the Miller, aged 82. their tragic deaths occurred as the result of an accident. During the winter of 1939, their frozen bodies were found in their home at Harrington. It was decided that they had been asphyxiated by gas from a hard-coal base-burner type stove used for heating, the fire having gone out for lack of fuel quite some time before the bodies were discovered". This sounds like carbon monoxide poisoning caused by a lack of adequate air ventilation to the room.

The two men were the last to be buried at the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery. The inscribed monument was erected shortly afterwards with James Fraser's name first, followed by that of John Stewart, Peter's father, Peter's siblings and finally Peter Alexander Stewart, himself.

James Fraser was the brother of Catherine (Katie) Fraser, who was brought up by Peter's father, John Stewart. He was the son of James Fraser and Christy Stewart, born 16th October 1870. His older sisters Mary and Catherine were born 21st July 1867 and 22nd April 1869, respectively. All three were baptised, together, at Charlotte Town on 18th April 1873.

-

Margaret Stewart in Marshfield, PEI

Although several sources claim that in January 1808 Margaret Stewart married John McLaren, the son of James McLaren, leader of the Brundenell Pioneers, there is no substantiated proof.

-

Colin McKenzie and Ann Stewart in Lot 60, PEI

Colin McKenzie leased his 100 acre farm in 1835 and was paying an annual rent of £5, so the quality of the ground probably was indifferent amd only 20 acres were arable. His main crop was potatoes (120 bushels), followed by oats (40 bushels) and wheat (20 bushels). His livestock was very limited: 1 horse; 3 cows; 12 sheep and 2 hogs.

Colin McKenzie had been born in Scotland and was over 60 at the time of the census. As he had not paid for his own passage when emigrating, he would have come with his parents as a young adult. The couple had only one child, a son, who was aged 16-45 in 1841.

-

John Stewart and Flora Cameron in Tulloch, Marshfield, PEI

Neil Stewart and Margaret (Jane) Scott in Rosetta Farm, Marshfield, PEI

According to Walter Bannerman Robertson's oral history of the area in 1935, Niel's wife was a sister of Alexander and John Scott in French Fort. Daughter of Peter Scott and Janet Robertson.

In March 1830 Neil Stewart was one of Trustees of St. Columba's Church, Blair-in-Athol, on St. Peter's Road, named in a deed given by Donald McBeath for the establishment of a 1 acre church property.

Neil Stewart inherited the lease on part of Tulloch Farm from his father in 1836.

The 1841 census shows that Niel's wife was born on PEI and that he was employing two Irish farm servants. The farm was of 300 acres, of which 40 acres were arable, and Niel paid an annual rent of £15. The main crop was potatoes (1,700 bushels), followed by oats (250 bushels) and wheat and barley (both 60 bushels). The livestock included 5 horses, 30 cattle, 40 sheep and 6 hogs.

Neil Stewart bought the 184 acre Rosetta Farm (S1, Lot 34) from the heirs of Lt. Col. Joseph Robinson on 27th February 1844 for £913 6s 5d. He bought an additional 43½ acres from Charles Palmer in May 1872, and three years later transferred it to his son Peter. A further 96 acres was transferred to Peter in July 1885. After Niel's death in 1886 the property passed to his son Peter, who sold part of it to Duncan Darrach while retaining the rest.
