James Robertson of Ballintuim

Erected in memory of James Robertson farmer, Ballintuim, Strathtummel who died 3rd July 1871 aged 59, and his wife Christina McLaren who died 2nd April 1903 aged 86 Also their family James died 4th January 1863 aged 17 Christina died 3rd April 1879 aged 22 Peter died at Tomdachoil 5th October 1893 aged 44 Donald died 4th October 1918 aged 58 Ann died 27th October 1925 aged 74 Jessie McLauchlan, wife of above Peter who died 30th November 1911 aged 62 - The Rev. Duncan Robertson D.D. born 15th January 1862 died 15th July 1941 Of the family of the above James Robertson Jane, Alexander and Duncan are buried elsewhere.

James Robertson of Cottown (Struan) and Christian McLaren of Achinruie, Glen Errochty, were married 17th December 1843 in the Parish of Blair Atholl.

After their marriage they lived near Struan, where their first children were born, but at some time between 1852 and 1856 the family moved to Strathtummel. James appears in the 1861 census, as a contractor at Balintuim farm, but in the 1871 census he is given as a farmer of 13 acres.

James was the son of James Robertson, crofter, and Anne McIntosh, according to his death certificate. His wife, Christina, was the daughter of Peter McLaren, crofter, and Ann McIntosh according to her death certificate. The fact that both James and Christina have mothers of the same name may seem rather strange, but is true. James's mother was living at Mill of Kincraigie when she married, and Christina's mother was living at Caltom. Neither James nor Christina have their births entered in the Old Parish Records, but it is well known that the records were poorly kept.

James Robertson and Christina McLaren had the following children:

Christian Robertson, born 23rd August 1856, died 3rd April 1879;
Donald Robertson, born 7th September 1859, farmer at Balintuim, Strathtummel, died 4th October 1918;
Rev. Duncan Robertson D.D, born 15th January 1862, died 15th July 1941.

Tomdachoille is near Pitlochry, on the west side of the River Tummel, south of Dunfallandy House (O.S. ref: NN 9540 5557).
